County looks for ways to stop trash dumpingFulton County Commissioners voted last week to direct staff to find ways to stop the city of Atlanta from dumping 300 tons of trash a day in the South Fulton Welcome All Community near College Park. The Atlanta City Council voted Oct.18 to transport trash to Advance Disposals Welcome All Transfer Station after the closing of the Live Oak Landfill in Southwest Dekalb County. Commissioners unanimously approved a motion by District 7 Commissioner William Bill Edwards to ask Environment and Community Development and the County Attorneys Office to review possible legal options for preventing the trash transfer. South Fulton was once called the dumping ground, but were trying to change that, said Commissioner Edwards. The board acted in response to complaints from citizens living near the transfer station. Dozens of residents met with Commissioner Edwards on October 16 to express their displeasure with Atlantas plan and accompanied him to a City Council meeting Monday to argue against the transfer.
