Turkey shoots, great coffee and a new church building
By Rev. Dr. Knox Herndon There was a great article that appeared this past week in the paper on a really neat specialty coffee shop in "downtown Senoia." It is right on Main Street which makes up THE street in downtown Senoia. Now before you smile at that statement, it wasn't too many years ago that downtown Fayetteville was not far behind. And for our Peachtree City readers, I remember when you had to drive for miles toward anywhere else, just to get a decant hamburger; remember?? Then remember when Newnan just had Sprayberry's BBQ and that was it? When we get our snooty looks out and look down our long noses at the rest of the world that is not Fayetteville, Peachtree City or Newman, we must remember "from whence we cometh" (KJV). Well it's here again, turkey shoot time at the church house. Starting on the first Saturday in November and all the Saturdays in November, we will be hosting our annual Turkey Shoot beginning at 9 a.m. and will stop only when the hunters stop streaming in. This is a very humbling experience. We see guys drive up in their $75,000 trucks with camo seats, and all the whistles and bells of all descriptions and bring out their several-thousand-dollar shotguns while wearing the latest all-matching camo, only to get humbled by a lady in our church by the initials T.G. who is using a borrowed Tommy Duncan shotgun (inside joke). This His House Turkey Shoot has become a serious endeavor in this part of the world. We have had serious shooters who have contested who won the turkey. This would result in a tense shoot-off. Tommy Duncan is the final arbitrator on which shooter came the closest to the X on the target! This is done with great precision, involving a magnifying glass and a centimeter ruler. On more than one occasion, he has pulled out his tools of the trade, to declare the winner!! We have kept the price per shot down to $3 so that more people can bring their family members and enjoy this fun together and hopefully take home a turkey for thanksgiving. In fact, my son, Robbie outshoots me every year! Everyone participating, will be required to read the safety rules and sign a waiver of liability form. Senoia is a fast-growing area with "for sale" signs up everywhere. There are a lot of areas for growth and we are very happy to be a part of it. Our new church building is 85 percent complete and we will hope to be in our building by Christmas if God deems it so. I personally want to thank all our Christian friends who have prayed for us and wished us well in this endeavor. God gave us the vision to do it and He has never let us down. We have been close several times on our bills but have never missed a payment. In our way of thinking, we often feel God is slow to move but after reflecting back on all the trials of building the church, He is an on-time God, every time. Come out any Saturday in November and enjoy the "fellowship of the shooters." And as always, if you're not in a church, please come visit. It has been said that "we will treat you soo many different ways, you're bound to like one of them." (Dr. Knox Herndon is the pastor of His House Community Church (SBC). Rev. Greg Mausz is Sr. Assoc. Dr. Lydia Herndon is the Sunday School superintendent, Bible study coordinator and teacher. The church is on Ga. Highway 85 South near Senoia, a mile south of Ga. Highway 16, on the right just past the fire station. Visitors welcome. Church office and prayer line 770-719-2365. E-mail address is KHERN2365@aol.com. Web address is www.hishousecommunitychurch.com.
