Playoffs still in sights for several local teamsBy MICHAEL BOYLAN
Though McIntosh and Fayette County have been eliminated from the playoff hunt and Whitewater, playing a non-region schedule, is ineligible for the playoffs this year, Starrs Mill, Sandy Creek, Landmark and Our Lady of Mercy are still in the playoff hunt and trying to move up in the seedings. AAAAA Starrs Mill plays in what could be considered to be the game of the week when they travel to take on Newnan. Both teams are 3-1 in the region and a win for either team could help towards securing the second seed in the region and guaranteeing a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Newnan and Starrs Mills region loss came against Lovejoy, which takes on East Coweta, also at 3-1 in the region, tonight. Starrs Mill has won two games in a row since the loss to Lovejoy and is coming off of a bye week, while Newnan lost to Lovejoy last week but had won five games in a row since then. The Panthers have an explosive offense led by running back Antonio Scott, who had three touchdowns in the Panthers last game, and a defense that can force turnovers, control the clock and take over a game. Newnans offense is led by quarterback Tyler Horne and receiver Jonathan Walker. AAAA McIntosh (3-5) has been eliminated from the playoff hunt after a disappointing 15-7 loss to Woodward Academy last week. The Chiefs had no trouble moving the ball but turnovers proved costly. McIntosh will travel to take on Haralson County (2-6) tonight and will host Chapel Hill in the final week. Haralson County lost to Sandy Creek 35-14 last week. The Chiefs are hoping to finish strong and if they do it will be because of a solid effort on both sides of the ball with limited mistakes. Sandy Creek (8-0) will host Alexander (1-7) tonight before traveling to Fairburn next week for a showdown with Creekside, which is likely to be undefeated going into the final game as well. The Patriots got three touchdowns from Jamal Rome last week and two touchdown passes from quarterback Josh Haney. Coaches will be looking for Sandy Creek to be clicking on all cylinders tonight, so that they will be primed for the game to decide the region championship next week. Alexanders lone win came against Chapel Hill on Sept. 24. Whitewater (5-3) will host their first homecoming activities this weekend, including a special Saturday afternoon football game against Mill Creek (3-6). The Wildcats ended a two game losing streak with 42-14 win over Alpharetta last week, while Mill Creek lost to Bremen last week. Whitewater has been getting consistently good performnces from a number of the same players including Tavoris Dixon, Jay Bright, Joanthan Jaurigue and Ryan Johnson among others. A Landmark Christian (4-4, 2-0 region) is heading to the playoffs. They could win another region title if they win their final two games against Whitefield Academy (5-3, 2-1 region) and Eagles Landing Christian (7-1, 2-0 region) respectively. The War Eagles are returning from a bye week, which should have helped some of their players recuperate. previous to the bye week, Landmark exploded for a 55-21 win over Our Lady of Mercy, with 41 points coming in the first quarter. Landmark has won three games in a row, while Whitefield has won one in a row, a 27-0 win over Mt. Zion, Carroll. All games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with the exception of Whitewaters 5 p.m. game on Saturday.
