Residents want buffers near Wal-Mart construction siteBy JOHN THOMPSON
The new WalMart being built by the Shannon Cove subdivision in Union City is causing a few growing pains. During Tuesdays Union City Council meeting, residents wanted questions answered about the ongoing construction. Im happy were getting a new WalMart, but theres not a retaining wall around it, said April Smith. Smith said she was concerned about the children who play in the neighborhood and possible crime the retailing giant could bring to the area. She also added that a lot of work was being done at the site early in the mornings, and that she would appreciate not being awakened. I dont want to be bothered with lights and noise, she said. Other residents questioned why there was no buffer in the area. Planning Director Ann Lippman said WalMarts property line did adjoin Shannon Cove, but because of setbacks and buffers it would not be right next to the subdivision. She said a vegetative buffer was required. WalMart has clear cut the property, but plans to put in additional plantings. Lippman also added that WalMart did not receive a variance for its sign request from the Planning Commission earlier in the week.
