New Chief comes to townBy LINDSAY BIANCHI After the mayor and city council considered over 100 applicants for the position, Fairburn has found a new police chief. The choice was narrowed down to three finalists and Charles Long was picked this week to oversee the department. Long, 40, who was acting chief in Huntersville, North Carolina before moving to Georgia, is married with two small children. He comes from a similar background, a growing small town. City administrator Jim Williams said. Hes very friendly, but hes also a strict disciplinarian. Were lucky to have him. Although the City Council votes to pick the chief, it is up to the mayor to ultimately decide. Chief Long is busy getting to know everyone right now. Williams added. Long recently applied for the position of chief in East Point, but was not picked for the job. Lieutenant J.H. Midkiff was acting chief in the interim before Long was hired. He did such a good job handling the department that he has been made deputy chief to be part of a new team of public servants in Fairburn. Chief Long will be introduced Monday night at the next City Council meeting along with new council member Mario Avery.
