Playoffs still on the mind of several teams as regular season enters final two weeksThere are two weeks left in the regular season of high school football. Fayette County and Our Lady of Mercy will have a bye week this week, while Landmark Christian and Starrs Mill are coming back from a week off. Teams are still jockeying for state tournament seedings and the playoff picture could get clearer after this week. In region 4-AAAA, Sandy Creek has one final tune-up before the clash for the region title at Creekside next Friday. This Friday, Sandy Creek will play host to Alexander (1-7). The Patriots (8-0) defeated Haralson County 35-14 last week. Sandy Creek trailed 14-7 early in the match but went on to score three unanswered touchdowns for the win. Jamal Rome had three touchdowns in the win, while Josh Haney threw touchdown passes to Brent Brewer and Terrance Roberts. Sandy Creek is assured of at least a second place finish in the region, which means a home game for the first round of the state playoffs. Whitewater High School (5-3) is playing a non-region schedule and wont be in the playoffs this year. The Wildcats are hoping for a strong finish though and they got back to their winning ways last week with a 42-14 win over Alpharetta. Tavoris Dixon had two touchdowns for Whitewater, while Lee Hardnett, Kurdice Neal and Kevin Leewallen each added one, as did Jonathan Jaurigue who had a defensive touchdown. Quarterback Jay Bright once again led the offense well, while Andy Skiles, Brice Thomas and Ryan Johnson all had good games on defense. After snapping their two game losing streak, Whitewater will now host Mill Creek (3-6) on Saturday at 5 p.m. McIntosh (3-5) moved the ball well against Woodward Academy but several turnovers led to a 15-7 loss. Cameron Wallis caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Brendan Hall for McIntoshs lone score. We played good team football but the turnovers cost us, said Coach Butch Prosser. The Chiefs will play at Haralson County (2-6) Friday night. In region 4-AAAAA, Fayette County played Mundys Mill last Thursday and lost 26-7. RiChard Davis scored the lone touchdown for the Tigers. He scored on a quarterback keeper in the fourth quarter after Jonathan Wtson left the game with an injury. Fayette County will have time to rest and heal the typical bumps and bruises that come with playing football. The Tigers (1-8) will have a bye week this week before hosting Starrs Mill in the final week for the annual Battle of the Rock. Starrs Mill (7-1) defeated Mundys Mill 38-0 before taking last week off. In the Mundys Mill game, Antonio Scott rushed for over 130 yards and three touchdowns, while Danny Newton did a good job on the offensive line and Erick Murphy put on what Coach Mike Earwood called a punting exhibition. The panther defense was also stout with Kenneth James, Ben Griffin and Bradley Connor had very good nights. This week, Starrs Mill will travel to take on Newnan (5-3). There is a three way tie for second with Starrs Mill, Newnan and East Coweta all at 3-1. In region 5-A, Landmark Christian (4-4, 2-0 region) comes back from a bye week hoping to continue their three game winning streak. Before the break, Landmark defeated Our Lady of Mercy 55-21. This week, they will host Whitefield Academy (5-3, 2-1 region), while Our Lady of Mercy (0-9, 0-3 region), which lost to Eagles Landing Christian Academy 41-18 last week, has a bye week this week. The Bobcats will play their final game of the season at home against Mt. Zion, Carroll. If Mt. Zion also enters the game without a region win, the winner of next weeks game will get a state playoff bid. All games, with the exception of Whitewaters 5 p.m. game on Saturday, wil start at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
