Bad Links? | Department of Education clean air efforts laudedThe Georgia Department of Education has received a 2004 PACE Award for stepping up efforts to reduce traffic congestion and keep the Metro Atlanta air clean. Under the leadership of State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox of Peachtree City, the GDOE began three innovative programs in 2004: flexible work schedules, teleworking, and a commute options program which encourages employees to leave their cars at home while using other forms of transportation to get to work. A long-time partner of the Clean Air Campaign, the GDOE also boosted participation in the Governors Work Away program and the Telework Leadership Initiative. Its important for government agencies to serve as role models for improving the environment, while providing the flexibility employees need to lead productive and fulfilling lives, Cox said. The GDOE has 380 employees working in Downtown Atlanta, who drive to work from all corners of the 13-county metro area. More than 70 percent of them are taking advantage of the new programs. The PACE awards are presented to employers who use the resources at hand to find new ways to reduce traffic and air pollution. Winners were chosen in four categories: small business, large business, public sector, and property management company. |
