Bad Links? | Lady Panthers still going strongThe Starrs Mill Lady Panther Volleyball team put another exclamation point on what is becoming their most successful season ever by finishing first in the Conyers Classic Volleyball Tournament over the past weekend. Ranked first in the state, the Lady Panthers competed in a field of 25 other high school teams in the two-day tournament. Starrs Mill began the tournament Friday evening by beating Clarke Central (25-8, 25-21) and Eagles Landing Christian Academy (25-11, 25-19). Pool play resumed Saturday morning, with the Lady Panthers continuing their winning ways and scoring victories over Henry County (25-15, 25-9), Eagles Landing High (25-11, 25-11) and Columbus (25-14, 25-18). Moving on to the Gold Level playoff round, Starrs Mill next played against local rival Sandy Creek, and recorded another win by beating the Patriots (25-14, 25-20). Next up was perennial powerhouse Oconee County. The Lady Panthers turned their playing level up a notch and defeated the Warriors in two games (25-17, 25-14). That meant only two teams were left standing for the tournament championship; Starrs Mill and St. Pius. Displaying their best volleyball of the tournament, the focused Lady Panthers played great team volleyball and beat a tough St. Pius team (25-20, 25-21). Most notable for the Lady Panthers efforts over the two days was that they did not lose a single game in their march through the field of this big tournament; they were a perfect 16-0 in games played. On Tuesday of last week, Starrs Mill traveled to Newnan where they beat both Fayette County in 2 games, and Newnan in two games. The Lady Panthers hosted Landmark Christian and Decatur last Thursday, and beat both teams 25-12, 25-21; and 25-18, 25-14, respectively. That gives the Starrs Mill team an impressive 12 match wins for the week, while going a perfect 24-0 in individual games. Their record setting season will end with some very tough competition from several state ranked schools this coming week, which should prepare them well for their upcoming run into the state playoffs. The McIntosh Lady Chiefs, currently ranked sixth in AAAA, have gone 1-3 in their last four games. They lost last Saturday to Northview, 25-18 and 25-22 and Lakeview Academy, 25-16, 25-23. On Tuesday, McIntosh defeated Mays, 25-10 and 25-14 and then lost to Woodward Academy, 25-14 and 25-12. The Lady Chiefs wil host Lovett and Lovejoy Tuesday at 5 p.m. |
