Residents to get a behind the scene glimpse of old Newnan

Newnan Coweta Historical Society member Jan Bowyer’s trip this spring helped spark a new fundraiser for the group.

Tomorrow, curious residents can take a "Second Story Tour" in historic downtown Newnan. Tour participants will have the opportunity to stroll around the downtown Newnan area visiting the designated second story commercial and residential facilities. The event is from 3 p.m.-7 p.m.

Bowyer had seen a similar tour on her travels this spring.

At a board meeting, Bowyer raised the idea and the group approved her concept.

Many of the buildings on the tour are over 100 years old and offer outstanding architectural and craftsmanship detail including such items as a 1900s painted Coca Cola wall sign now found inside on a stairway wall, original brass doorknobs, and hardwood fixtures. There are 13 sites on the tour with the 100 year old Coweta County Courthouse serving as the highlight of the tour.

The tour also includes a law office, interior design business, hair salon, antique/art gallery, county solicitor's office, state court judge's office, firehouse lofts, a home to a previous superintendent of the Newnan Cotton Mill, a former hosiery mill and department store. Docents will provide historical and current information at each site.

The Historical Society urges residents to wear comfortable shoes and be aware that the locations on this tour have only stairway access. At two of the stops refreshments will be provided by Parks and Mottola Real Estate and Welden Financial.

Ticketed participants have the option of taking a "Guided Walking Tour" of the downtown square area, at no additional charge. Tours will begin on the eastside of the Coweta County Courthouse at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m..

Tickets may be purchased prior to tomorrow at the following locations: NCHS Male Academy Museum, Scott's Bookstore, Greenville Antiques and Art Gallery, Coweta County Welcome Center & Visitors Bureau, or tomorrow at the following three sites: Coweta County Courthouse on the square, Bank of America parking lot, (corner of LaGrange and Spring Streets) or at Welden Financial, 52 Field Street. The cost of the ticket is $15. Tickets purchased earlier than the tour date need to be redeemed for a red wrist bracelet at the three ticket sites tomorrow.
