Bad Links? | Palmettos millage stays the sameBy LINDSAY BIANCHI The passing of the coming years millage rate brought several questions from the citizens in attendance at Palmetto's monthly meeting Monday evening. Mayor Clark Boddie patiently explained the process by which the annual figure is calculated placating the confusion brought on by the annual property tax. Last years rate of 4.20 mills will remain the same for the following year. Still clarification was needed to insure that only house which were reassessed at random during April and May of this year would see any kind of increase in their property taxes. The average persons house will not go up. Mayor Boddie assured the concerned citizens, The reassessments are purely luck of the draw. A more tangible concern to the citizens of Palmetto met with some discussion as many people in town are being inconvenienced by the long trains of cargo passing through town. It was reported by the fire chief that tracks were being blocked for an inordinate amount of time, one instance lasting nearly three days. The chief reminded those present that it is a danger to the police and fire departments in that it hinders their service to the community. It was strongly suggested that an ordinance be created to put a halt to these mobile obstructions. As such, a citation can be issued by the police department and the train block can be ordered to break its link after a thirty minute period. The mayor assured those present that this problem would be looked into with the help of the police department. |
