Local teams playing great ball vs. top teamsStarrs Mills varsity volleyball team is ranked number one in Class AAAAA, Sandy Creek and McIntosh are ranked fourth and sixth respectively in Class AAAA and Landmark Christian is ranked fourth in Class A/AA, according to a volleyball coaches poll at www.gasports.com. The teams are entering the final stretch of the regular season and are tuning up for the region and state playoffs. Among the games this week were matchups between several of these teams. Starrs Mill (25-4) got wins over Houston County, 25-5 and 25-16, and Lovejoy, 25-15, 25-7 last week. Yesterday, after the paper went to press, Starrs Mill hosted Landmark (17-10) and Decatur. The Lady Panthers have been ranked number one for four straight weeks, thanks to a very balanced attack and solid defense. Outisde hitters Kursten Carr and Kelley Elder have provided a strong attack this season and also lead the team in digs and pancakes along with Shelley MacBean. It has been a team effort to put Starrs Mill in their current position and everyone from setter Niki Patriarca to Honomi Shinba on the back line has contributed to the teams success. McIntosh has won 10 games in a row. Their last five have come against Fayette County, East Coweta, Booker T. Washington, Sandy Creek and Northgate. The Sandy Creek/Northgate match took place at Northgate on Tuesday night and the matches were close with McIntosh edging the Lady Patriots, 25-23 and 25-18. The team has had strong defense and power serving to help them to an 18-5 record. Senior captain Amanda Crawford is due to return from an ACL injury soon, but the team has seen good play from last years starters like Abby Muetzel and Danielle Crawford to new players such as Megan Cheatham and Brianna Argumosa. McIntosh will play several matches this Saturday at the Northview Play Day. They are scheduled to take on Holy Innocents, Northview and Lakeview Academy. Our Lady of Mercy has won four games in a row, including a region win over Grady. The team is getting strong play from middle hitter Thomasennia Berry and Rhiannon Martinelli and will get outside hitter Megan Liddy back from injury soon.
