Fairburn recognizes city employeesThere was more than a note of thanks heard Monday evening when Mayor Betty Hannah and the Fairburn City Council expressed their appreciation to their city employees. Public works employees Robert Arnold and James Brewster were given standing ovations for helping the city weather the last two storms during the recent hurricane season. Although damage was nowhere near as severe as in the state of Florida, city employees Arnold and Brewster made a big difference in Fairburns ability to stay afloat. A small reception was held before the meeting to thank Arnold, Brewster, and all those who helped with the citys cleanup. Mayor Hannah presented a plaque to Robert Arnold for 30 years of service to the city, calling him one of our most dedicated employees. The mayor commended Arnold for his disposition, who began working for the city of Fairburn September 16, 1974. Thirty years is a long time and you still have a smile on your face. Arnold accepted his award humbly without comment letting his record speak for itself. Besides repairing streets, removing debris, tending to the citys flowers and lawns, his help each year with the Old Campbell County Homecoming preparations was particularly appreciated by Councilman Marianne Johnson. James Brewster also received a plaque and accolades for 35 years of service to the city. The mayor spoke of his unique combination of expertise and common sense. Brewster, who was one of Fairburns first volunteer fire fighters, has been an asset to the citys water system and electric cable service. I want to thank the city of Fairburn employees. Yall are some good employees. If something happens we help each other," said Hannah. Brewster began working for the city on September 28, 1969 and was the first city employee to be featured in the employee newsletter. These are the employees that make this city great, the mayor concluded. Everyone on the city council added his or her personal thanks to Arnold and Brewster and all of the citys crew. Councilman Doug Crawford made it clear that he knew what it was like to do the job. When I got out of the Navy in 1954, I worked for the city from December to April of 1955. A cold winter of busted water pipes and pick and shovel work were mentioned to drive his point home. Ive been there and done that. Crawford concluded. The work they do is not easy, Councilman Ron Alderman added, I learned about employee humility and the love for their jobs. The mayor summed up Fairburns appreciation for Robert Arnold and James Brewster. I consider them my friends. We show our appreciation when we pass by and wave at them. Its about people and the citizens.
