All Childrens Playground opens with Phase IIIThe All Childrens Playground reopened Sept. 23 after being closed for about a month to install the third phase of the totally accessible playground. There is still a minor drainage issue that the contractors will need to work on, but it will not interfere with the playgrounds opening, according to Randy Gaddo, Peachtree Citys director of leisure services. The drainage problem is an aesthetic issue and doesnt affect the safety or function of the playground, said Gaddo. We decided to open up because children and their parents were really anxious to have it open up, especially with the nice weather weve had. Temporary fencing has been put up and installation of the permanent fence is scheduled for this week. A portion of the playground may have to be closed for a couple of days to rectify the drainage issue, but the whole playground wont be closed, Gaddo said. The playground has become one of the premiere features of the city, and the third phase added even more attractions with several swings, a toddler area and even a small water spray feature. Final adjustments still need to be made to the water feature as well. The Luther T. Holt Memorial All Childrens Playground is fully accessible to all children, including those with handicaps, by use of ramps and special ADA compliant steps that allow easy access to all play features. A rubberized surface provides easy access for wheelchairs or walkers, and is exceptionally safe for falls. The playground was funded by private donations raised by a citizens committee that started the effort about five years ago. Total cost of the facility is $150,000.
