The Hungarian Takács String Quartet, recognized as perhaps
the worlds premier string quartet, will perform at Spivey
Hall October 10 at 3 p.m..
The Takács Quartet was formed in 1975 at Budapest's Liszt
Academy. It first received international attention in 1977, winning
First Prize and the Critics' Prize at the International String
Quartet Competition in Evian, France. Soon after, the Takács
won the Gold Medal at the 1978 Portsmouth and Bordeaux Competitions
and First Prizes at the Budapest International String Quartet
Competition (1978) and the Bratislava Competition (1981). The
quartet made its North American debut tour in 1982.
Now entering its 29th season, the Takács Quartet has performed
in virtually every music capital in North America, Europe, Australia
and Japan, as well as at prestigious festivals including Aspen,
Berlin, Mostly Mozart, Ravinia and Tanglewood.Ê The ensemble
is also dedicated to recording. Of sixteen recordings made in
the last sixteen years, the Takács has won many awards including
a Grammy for the Quartets Beethoven Cycle (middle quartets),
released in May 2002.
Their Spivey Hall program will include Beethoven (Op. 131),
Bartók (No. 3) and Borodin (No. 2).
