Homecoming games sweet to Patriots and TigersBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Sandy Creeks varsity football team had a considerable test in front of them last Friday and the Patriots passed, winning 21-12 and staying undefeated. Reggie Ellington started off the scoring for Sandy Creek in their homecoming game with a 23-yard touchdown run. Stephan Atrice had an interception for the Patriots in the second quarter but a fumble on the ensuing drive gave the ball back to Dougas County, which scored a touchdown on a 7-yard run. The Tigers missed the extra point and Sandy Creek scored soon after with a 57-yard touchdown reception from Brent Brewer. Brandon Lawrence intercepted a Douglas County pass with just under two minutes remaining but Sandy Creek fumbled once again on a scoring drive and went into the locker room with a 14-6 lead. The score remained the same going into the final quarter thanks in part to a field goal block from Justin Brown. Early in the fourth quarter Brandon Swann recovered a fumble and Jamal Rome tacked on the final touchdown for Sandy Creek with a 14-yard touchdown run. Douglas County wasnt done, though. They scored on a 7-yard quarterback keeper but then could not convert the two-point conversion. Sandy Creek (5-0) is on top of the region standings, while Douglas County now has three region losses. The Patriots will play at Lithia Springs (2-4) this Friday. In other AAAA games, McIntosh picked up their second consecutive win with a 28-26 win over Lithia Springs. The Chiefs got 231 yards rushing and four touchdowns from Charles Castleberry. Coach Butch Prosser gave credit to the offensive line for stepping up and also to Tyler Harris for intercepting a Lithia Springs pass in the closing seconds to seal the win. McIntosh will host Northgate Friday night for homecoming. Whitewater (4-1) shut out Dutchtown 30-0 last Friday. The defense was remarkable and played a strong game as a complete unit, while the offense once more was paced by quarterback Jay Bright, Blake Underwood and Tavarez Dixon. The crowd also got a thrill from a 48 yard field goal from Jordan Cooper to end the first half. This week, Whitewater will host a Saturday night game against Landmark Christian School (2-4). In region 4-AAAAA action, Fayette County got their first win of the season in their homecoming game against Union Grove. The Tigers built up a 27-3 lead at the half and added 12 more points in the second half to get a huge 39-17 win. Fayette got scores from Chaning Welch, RiChard Davis, Gary Beltran and Barrett Ratliff. The Tigers will play Lovejoy at Twelve Oaks Stadium on Friday. Starrs Mill (5-1) was handed their first loss of the season last Friday when Lovejoy defeated the Panthers 27-26 in overtime. The Panthers got touchdowns from Antonio Scott, Robby Davis and Carter Scurry. Starrs Mill will host East Coweta on Friday. In region 5-A, Landmark Christian School picked up their second win of the season with a 40-8 win over Mt. Zion, Carrollton. Landmark will play a non-region game at Whitewater High School at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Our Lady of Mercy faced Bowdon last week and lost 48-13. This week, the Bobcats will travel to face Whitefield Academy.
