Bad Links? | New auditoriums almost ready at Whitewater, Sandy CreekBy J. FRANK LYNCH New auditoriums at both Sandy Creek and Whitewater high schools should be complete and ready to start hosting student productions and assemblies by early October, members of the Fayette County Board of Education were told this week. Construction Manager Klaus Darnell gave an update on ongoing construction projects at Mondays board meeting At Whitewater High, which welcomed ninth- and 10th-grade students to its Lisbon Road campus for the first time in August, final electrical work is all thats left to finish the 600-seat auditorium. Electricians and the general contractor are also working on punch list items throughout the school campus, mainly in the mornings before students arrive and on weekends, Darnell said. At Sandy Creek, where the new auditorium is identical to the one at Whitewater, workers were installing the theater seats last week, Darnell said. Ductwork was nearly complete, and painting was being finished in the auditorium. Installation of the stage lighting was nearly complete as well, he said. Workers had paved a new parking area and entrance to the school, and painting was to be finished next week on the soaring lobby of the auditorium which ties into a dramatic new entranceway to the high school. Meanwhile, at McIntosh High work continues to complete the new physical education facility by the end of the year. The exterior brick walls of the new gym are in place, and the roof has been installed. Masonry work continues in the public restrooms and locker room, and railings are being installed around the upper-level indoor track, Darnell reported. On the other side of campus, plumbing is being installed for a new kitchen which should also be finished by December. Once completed, the old kitchen will be demolished to expand the cafeteria dining space. Starting early next year, the old gym will be converted into a performing arts center including an auditorium like Whitewater and Sandy Creek. Darnell said that project is on target to be completed by fall of 2005. |
