Bad Links? | Hopewell UMC to celebrate anniversary, homecomingHopewell United Methodist Church in Tyrone will celebrate its 150th anniversary Sunday, Oct. 10. The celebration coincides with the annual Homecomingt, which will be held during the morning service, beginning at 11 a.m. An old-fashioned hymn singing will be held at noon, and the celebration will continue with the traditional dinner on the grounds, at 12:30 p.m. Oldest members of the congregation will be recognized, as well as the family who traveled the greatest distance to attend the Homecoming . The Rev. Jimmy Ellison, pastor of Providence UMC, in Peachtree City, will deliver the sermon. Ellison, son of Hopewell members, Marie and Calvin Ellison, grew up at Hopewell. Some members of the congregation will dress in the style of the mid-1800s, to lend a bit of nostalgia to the proceedings. It will be hard to recreate the founding year of 1854, a spokesperson said, but Hopewell members will attempt to make the day as authentic as possible. Hopewell UMC is on Jenkins Road, off Ga. Hwy. 74, north of downtown Tyrone. |
