Bad Links? | Cary to speak in VirginiaCarolyn Cary, author of William Thomas Overby: Proud Partisan Ranger, will be speaking this Saturday in Front Royal, Virginia, the scene of Overbys death Sept. 23, 1864. The Confederate soldier, who was reared in the Coweta County community now known as Sharpsburg, was a member of Mosbys Rangers. Five of the soldiers were captured in Front Royal; three were shot and two were hanged. Overby was one of those hanged. September 23rd, said Cary, is both a memorial day in Front Royal and also in Coweta County. I am honored to have been chosen to speak at this years event in Virginia. Several hundred persons are always on hand for this event, plus this is the 140th anniversary of The Shenandoah Campaign of 1864. Overby was killed as a part of this campaign by Union forces to destroy crops in the Shenandoah Valley that were feeding the troops of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. A book signing has been arranged for Cary at the Warren Rifle Museum in early afternoon in Front Royal. I have made a number of friendships in this community in the process of my seven years of research for my book. I had to ask camp commander Sam Riggs, Mosby Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, to stop what he was doing several times to pursue a piece of information I needed, and he always graciously complied. Cary has lived in Georgia for 45 years and has always written on historical issues. I get my love of this subject from my late father, she said. |
