Bad Links? | Students raise money for seniorsSixty first-graders trouped in to the Grantville Elementary School library last week to present the Grantville Senior Citizens Center with a gift of $196.35 to purchase new curtains for the center. The Grantville students had saved and raised nickels and dimes for weeks in preparation for the gift, which was given in honor of Grandparents Day. The center will use the money to have the curtains made to match renovation work going on at the center. They have been working hard for two weeks to help the Grantville Senior Center, teacher Tammy Ayers told the dozen seniors who stopped by Friday afternoon. Students Rainey Ayers and Drew Cheek presented cards to the visitors from the Senior Center. Beighley Thornock read a poem for the visitors: Grandparents are fun. Grandparents are neat. We made these cards for you Because you are so sweet. Happy Grandparents Day. Students from Ayers class, Celeste Clarks class and Luann Larsons class adopted the fundraising project as a Service Learning Project. Efforts like that help make students better citizens, said Ayers. The teachers invited the seniors to come to their classrooms any time, to visit, read to students, or tell them stories from when they were in school. Hiram Adamson told the students how lucky they were to have a nice school like Grantville. He told them how, growing up in Clayton County, he attended a two room school, with two teachers, and how he brought his own lunch every day. Adamson raises goats, and the students asked him to bring a goat to the school one day. Schools across Coweta celebrated Grandparents Day last week.Arbor Springs Elementary celebrated the day on Friday also, with Dr. Gene Tyre of First Baptist Church in Newnan coming by as a guest speaker. 426 grandparents visited Arbor Springs Friday for breakfast for the grandparents, a video presentation of our kids, and other school events and activities. Dr. Tyre spoke about the many challenges and rewards of grandparenting, and the crucial role grandparents play in the lives of their grandchildren, said Principal Patti Falk.He spoke lovingly of his own grandson, Mihai, and the strong relationship hes built with him. He also reminded our grandparents of the many opportunities to be more directly involved in their grandchildrens lives, such as shared activities, developing a solid bond with them, volunteering at school, taking the time to share those opportunities to mold their lives. Following breakfast, grandparents then visited their grandchildrens classrooms for activities planned by the teachers and student, including reading favorite stories, acting out skits, sharing of things the students have accomplished this year, and Tell Me About When You Were in School. Falk thanked the Arbor Springs School Council, Arbor Springs PTA, and Buffalo Rock for their support for the day.
