Bad Links? | Patriots top Chiefs in region game, Panthers stay unbeatenBy MICHAEL BOYLAN The Sandy Creek Patriots hosted the McIntosh Chiefs in a region matchup Friday night and won 33-3. The Chiefs got on the board first after Jeff Patrie recovered a Sandy Creek fumble and Nader Jarun kicked a 32-yard field goal. Sandy Creek then drove 80 yards down the field and quarterback Josh Haney scored on a six-yard keeper. The snap for the extra point was fumbled but the Patriots earned a 6-3 lead. They scored again with just under five minutes to go in the second quarter when fullback Jamal Rome rumbled for a one-yard touchdown. Sandy Creeks Justin Brown blocked the next McIntosh punt and Reggie Ellington added a touchdown with 30 seconds left in the half. Sandy Creek got two more touchdowns in the second half when wide receiver Terrance Roberts and tight end Mike Gates caught passes for scores. Brandon Lawrence added an interception for Sandy Creek. McIntoshs starting quarterback Brendan Hall was injured in the first quarter and was replaced by Drew Webb. Charles Castleberry had a number of good runs for the Chiefs, while Wes Kincaid, Kevin Cline and Anthony Caldwell all had good moments on defense. McIntosh (1-2) will host Alexander (0-4) Friday, while Sandy Creek (3-0) will play at Chapel Hill (0-3). Alexander has only scored 21 points this year. They lost to Northgate 38-6 last week. Chapel Hill has scored 28 points this year and lost to Villa Rica 27-9 last week. Whitewater High School was off last week. The Wildcats (2-1) will play at North Oconee (0-3) Saturday. In AAAAA action, Fayette County fell to Carrollton 14-0. The Tigers (0-4) will play at Newnan (2-2) on Friday. Newnan has won two games in a row, defeating Douglass, 21-6 and Decatur, 7-0. Starrs Mill stayed perfect with a come-from-behind homecoming win over Tri-Cities last Friday. The Panthers trailed Tri-Cities 13-0 late in the first half but got two touchdowns in the final two minutes to take a 14-13 lead into the locker room. Carter Scurry and Sean OBrien both had touchdown receptions for Starrs Mill in the first half while Kyle McCreary, who rushed for 117 yards, scored on a two yard touchdown run and Keegan hanie added a 40 yard field goal to complete the 23-13 win. Starrs Mill will travel to take on a tough Union Grove team on Friday. Union Grove (3-1) is averaging 33.3 points per game in their wins. They lost to Grayson 11-7 last week. In class A, Landmark Christian (1-3) fell to Bowdon 34-7, while Our Lady of Mercy (0-4) lost to Bremen 55-0. Landmark will host Bremen (4-0), while the Bobcats will host Aquinas (3-0). Aquinas defeated North Oconee 35-14. Our Lady of Mercy coach Curtis Barrineau cited good play from Mike Donald, who played well until he was injured in the game. Barrineau also stated that Dominic Fabian and Bernard Michel played well. |
