Starrs Mill celebrates homecoming, Chiefs head to the BattlefieldBy MICHAEL BOYLAN
Starrs Mill has yet to play a region game but they have been flexing their muscles against a variety of opponents this season. They have outscored their opponents 90-19 and have yet to play a game at home. Tonight, the Panthers get their first home game, appropriately enough on Homecoming. They will host Tri-Cities (0-1) which lost in their only game of the season to Lowndes, 52-0. Starrs MIll has climbed into the AAAAA state rankings. They are currently ranked 10th, thanks to a stout defense and a multi-faceted ground game. Players to watch: RB Kyle McCreary, DB Justin Dupont Fayette County, our other local team in AAAAA, is having the opposite problem with their non-region opponents. The Tigers (0-3) have rushed for over 200 yards in two of their games but have had a difficult time converting their offensive efforts into points. Tonight, Fayette County travels to take on Carrollton (3-0) which has handed losses to Dalton, Newnan and Oconee County. Players to watch: WR RiChard Davis, LB Tyler Betsill McIntosh comes back from a bye week to face Sandy Creek at the Patriots home field. The Chiefs (1-1) lost to Douglas County in the first week but were awarded a win due to ineligible Douglas County players and then fell to Villa Rica in the second week. They will have their hands full with Sandy Creek (2-0) who have beaten Villa Rica and Northgate so far and are in the hunt to repeat as region champs. Players to watch: MC - RB Tyson Sandlin, DB Anthony Caldwell. SC - RB Reggie Ellington, LB Brian Brown Whitewater, which defeated the McIntosh JV 51-7 last Thursday, is off this week. Landmark Christian fell to Social Circle last week, 21-6, but coach Kenny Dallas wont let the War Eagles get too down. The team has yet to play a region game and while wins would be nice, preparing for the gauntlet of region game beginning at the end of this month is much more important. Landmark will travel to take on former region foe Bowdon (2-1) tonight. Bowdon has defeated Mt. Zion Carrollton, 43-16 and Alpharetta 59-17. The War Eagles will have their work cut out for them but if they can cut out turnovers and force Bowdon into some mistakes, they may pull out a win. Players to watch: WR Miles King, DB Aaron Braxton Our Lady of Mercy has not had an easy season and they have faced some very tough non-region competition. They too are hoping that a difficult non-region schedule will prepare them for their region schedule and a possible playoff berth. After falling to a hard running Oglethorpe County team last Friday, 35-6, the Bobcats will travel to take on Bremen (3-0). The Blue Devils have defeated two of Our Lady of Mercys region opponents, Eagles Landing Christian Academy, 48-6 and Whitefield Academy, 35-14, and are averaging over 45 points per game. Our Lady of Mercy will need to play a near perfect game to escape with a win. Players to watch: RB Doc Lee, DB Wynton Yates All games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight
