Frances delivers glancing blow to countyBy JOHN THOMPSON
And now the cleanup begins. Coweta residents battened down the hatches earlier this week as Tropical Storm Frances roared through the county. The storm dumped more than six inches of rain on the county and caused numerous trees and power lines to come down. Cowetas students got a day off from school, as school officials quickly decided to cancel classes. Superintendent Blake Bass said that Coweta-Fayette EMC informed him that approximately 5,000 Coweta EMC customers were without power at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.ĘThe city of Grantville also experienced power outages due to downed power lines. At least four Coweta County schools, including Willis Road, Newnan Crossing, Moreland and Grantville, were without power. We also talked with the Coweta County Sheriffs Department and received reports of numerous roads all over the county which were blocked or partially blocked because of the storm, said Bass. Georgia Power and Coweta-Fayette EMC crews worked through the storm Tuesday and had most of the power returned by Wednesday. In Senoia, residents were still cleaning up from numerous downed trees and branches. In order to further help residents, the Coweta County C&D Landfill, located on Essie Mae Walker Road, will accept residential storm debris through September 18th with the disposal fee being waived. The Coweta County Board of Commissioners gave unanimous approval to this free disposal time for residential use only. The waiving of the disposal fee is for debris created by the recent remnants of Tropical Storm Frances and pertains to individual citizens bringing the debris in their personal vehicles.
