Fairburn extending cable to Union CityBy LINDSAY BIANCHI
Fairburn Mayor Betty Hannah agreed to sign a letter of credit for $60,000 at the City Councils meeting last week that will allow Fairburn to extend cable services to Union City. Georgia Power requested the letter of credit to cover any damages that may be done to their power poles. In other action, funds from the sewer bond account were allocated to help complete infrastructure mapping that will provide a complete and accurate inventory of the citys major facilities. Streets, curbs, gutters, electric poles and sewers are being catalogued and put onto a map. The task order, not to exceed $371,000, passed unanimously. Integrated Science and Engineering, ISE, the firm doing the mapping, will locate and identify the 1,050 manhole covers, 1,200 fire hydrants and miles of sewer systems, electrical systems and cable systems which service the city. The map should be completed within the next three to four months and will provide up-to-date information for subcontractors. To regulate construction on city right-of-ways, a proposed encroachment permit application was approved for use by the city. The document protects the city and gives a detailed outline of the work to be done. In a memo from City Administrator Jim Williams, he stated that this simply formalizes many of the citys standards and practices. Williams pointed out that, this gives the city an idea about what is going on, and will help in policing the area for cleanliness when the job is finished. The extension of Harris Road from Plantation Road to Ga. Highway 74 made it necessary for the council to condemn a seven acre track owned by Kishore Chadalavada, Swarnalatha Thadikamalla, Murali K. Chitluri and Murray G.K. Manne. The city claimed eminent domain over the land in question. Williams said that the project will allow for much better movement of traffic in the area when it is finished. Funds have been set aside in a special escrow account to cover the cost of attaining the property.
