Former Sharpsburg mayor dies

One of the county’s best known politicians passed away lasst week. The former mayor of Sharpsburg, Alvin M. Arrowood, died suddenly Nov. 24, 2004. He was 79 years old. He had lived in Sharpsburg for 34 years.
He had served on the Sharpburg council for 30 years, 14 of those as mayor. He chose not to run again for office two years ago.
Arrowood was born July 6, 1925 in Atlanta. He was reared in the West End, and was a graduate of Tech High, Atlanta. He served in the United States Navy for four years as a machinist mate.
A member of Union Local 72, he apprenticed in plumbing and air conditioning, and worked at Fort McPherson for 30 years. Not being the type to be entirely retired, he worked at Gilroy’s Hardware Store in Peachtree City for eight years.
He was an active member of Sharpsburg Baptist Church and the Sharpsburg Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Services were at the Sharpsburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Watson Mills officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Webb Arrowood, whom he married in April, 1951; daughters Pattie Arrowood and Connie Smith, both of Sharpsburg; and a granddaughter, Jessica Harman, Sharpsburg.
McKoon Funeral Home, Newnan, was in charge.
