Redevelopment plan: level, rebuild gas stationsBy JOHN MUNFORD
Two Fayetteville gas stations wont just get a remodeling job. Instead, they will be demolished and rebuilt under plans that have been approved by the Fayetteville Planning and Zoning Commission. Two Flash Foods gas stations are headed for the wrecking ball, both on Ga. Highway 54. One of the stations is downtown next to Jeff Davis Drive and the other is on the far west side near Gingercake Road. The latter is experiencing problems with its septic system and wants to hook up to the citys sewer system. The redevelopment plans were approved by the commission at its meeting Tuesday night. The commission also tabled a proposal to build two retail buildings and two office buildings on Ga. Highway 54 and Grady Avenue. One of the retail buildings would have residential space on a second floor, according to the plans for The Shops at Highway 54 West. That 5.2 acre parcel is inside the citys Main Street district and thus would have to meet certain guidelines including the location of parking in the rear; that requirement was created to make it easier to move buildings closer to the street for aesthetic purposes. The applicant wants the parcel rezoned from single family residential to planned community district. To qualify for that designation, 20 percent of the sites area must be left as open space, according to city guidelines.
