Deal in works to help funeral home with parking for expansionA solution might be in the offing to allow Mowell and Sons Funeral Home to lease or purchase nearby city property to use for parking. City officials have balked at the business plans for expansion, which involves constructing a new building, because the design features parking alongside Jeff Davis Drive, a no-no in the citys Main Street District. The preferred design would somehow have the new building closer to the street with parking in the rear. Funeral home officials have maintained there isnt enough room to avoid having parking along Jeff Davis since the new building will be further back on the lot toward Church Street. The potential solution is an offer from the city for the funeral home to lease or purchase city property near the water tower which is directly adjacent to the funeral homes tract. The City Council has given the Fayetteville Downtown Development Authority the go-ahead to enter such negotiations with funeral home officials. City Clerk Judy Stephens noted that the city would need to retain the right to use the property on occasion when needed for events at the city-owned train depot.
