Lady Panthers bats quiet in opening gamesAfter edging out the Fayette County Lady Tigers 5-4 in the season opener and snatching two early wins in the Kell tournament, 2-0 over Alpharetta and 7-2 over Wheeler, Starrs Mills varsity softball team was shut out for three straight games. Were not swinging the bat real well right now, said coach Mark Willamson. Its hard to win when you dont puch any runs across the plate. After the three shutouts in the Kell tournament, Starrs Mill rebounded with a 3-0 win over Roswell in the tournament before losing 3-0 to Union Grove. Union grove handed the Lady Panthers another loss, 2-0, Tuesday night. Starrs Mills record right now is 4-5, but Williamson isnt too worried. One of our biggest questions this season was how well our pitching would hold up, said Williamson. So far, Jackie Jones and Amanda Howett have done a good job of keeping us in games. The problem, aside from a hitting slump, is allowing unearned runs and Williamson attributes this to trying players out at some different positions. When a definitive lineup is set and the team gets used to set people at those positions, Williamson feels a majority of the mistakes will fall by the wayside. In addition to citing good play from Jones and Howett over the weekend, Williamson also gave credit to shortstop Lindsey Walker, who was batting .375 after the tournament. Starrs Mill played at Woodstock last night after the paper went to press.
