Lady Chiefs rebuilding under former playerThe McIntosh varsity softball team isnt a team that strikes fear in anyones heart, but they are a spirited bunch filled with underclassmen and they are gaining experience and confidence every day. The Lady Chiefs (4-9 overall and 1-1 in the region) are coached by Kristy Lewis, who played for McIntosh from 1992-1996. She was coached by Steve Kidd, whose daughter Morgan, a freshman, is the teams only pitcher. She is also leading the team in RBI (6) and a .324 batting average. Lewis is in her second year of coaching and is laying the groundwork to build the program back to what t was in her playing days. Only one senior is a starter for the Lady Chiefs, Cory Lowe; the rest of the team is made up of underclassmen. Lewis has the team playing in several tournaments this year to help build team chemistry and get the team prepared for their region schedule. Now playing in AAAA, McIntosh will still face competitive teams, but Lewis feels they may see differences in pitching speeds from game to game which can be very challenging. Among the other players on her squad she cites for good play so far are second baseman Kelsey Dawson, outfielder Erin Milani and catcher Amelia Beach. Dawson and Beach are the teams captains. Amelia has been up to bat more than anyone this year and has been a great team leader, while Kelsey has been doing a great job of moving our runners around the bases, said Lewis. She added that Milani has a batting average of .294 and has been a big help offensively. McIntosh lost to Northgate 5-0 Tuesday, after falling to them in extra innings in the Sandy Creek tournament last weekend. The Lady Chiefs hosted Haralson County last night after the paper went to press.
