Interesting matchups in second week of football seasonBy MICHAEL BOYLAN
While only McIntosh will be playing a region game tonight when they play at Villa Rica, all of the local teams will be facing good competition in some very intriguing matchups. Region 4-AAAAA: Fayette County (0-1) hopes to get in the win column this week as they host Jonesboro. The Tigers lost 28-3 at Upson-Lee last week but hung in with the Knights for the first half. Kip Rossi had a good game on defense with seven tackles, Channing Welch and Jeremy Fowler helped the Tigers put up over 200 yards rushing. Jonesboro ended up tied at 13 with Mundys Mill last week. The game also has significance because Fayette County coach Tommy Webb used to coach at Jonesboro and a win over his former school would be welcome. Starrs Mill (1-0) trades in the glitz and glamour of playing in the Georgia Dome for a match against Pebblebrook (0-0) that will be broadcast on Comcast channel 45. The Panthers defeated Walton 20-3 last week thanks to some huge plays on offense from Antonio Scott and Sean OBrien and an awesome performance from their defense. If teams improve from week to week, Starrs Mill should have another good performance against the Falcons, who have good team speed and run the option, which makes them often difficult to defend. Region 4-AAAA: Sandy Creek has a week to prepare for what will be an epic battle at Northgate next Friday, while McIntosh gets to face Villa Rica, the team the Patriots easily defeated last week. McIntosh (1-0) faced an extremely talented Douglas County team last Friday and lost 47-3. They got the win by forfeit, however, when it was learned that several Douglas County players were ruled ineligible. The Chiefs showed occasional flashes of brilliance on both sides of the ball from Tyson Sandlin and Zach Brown on offense and Anthony Caldwell and Sean Nerny on defense. The Chiefs should have a much better game tonight against a team that they should match up well with. Whitewater (1-0) outlasted Temple last week 13-12 and had a great night defensively with four interceptions. They got touchdowns from Kevin Lewallen and Blake Underwood. Tonight, the Wildcats are on the road once again, as they will travel to take on Heard County (1-0). The Braves defeated Callaway 18-13 last week and should give Whitewater a good game. Region 5-A: Landmark Christian (0-1) was smacked around a bit by Twiggs County last week, but coach Kenny Dallas feels the team will learn from their mistakes and continue to improve. Tonight, they will host Cross Keys (0-1), which lost to Druid Hills 33-8 last Friday. Our Lady of Mercy (0-1) lost to a highly-ranked and talented Pacelli team last week 61-0 and lost sophomore Matt Sanchez to a severe injury. Sanchez broke his fifth vertebrae and is currently at Shepherd Spinal Center. The Bobcats will host Walker (0-1) tonight. Walker fell to Whitefield Academy last week. Walker and Our Lady of Mercy are similar in that both teams are playing under new coaches and are still putting the pieces together. Games tonight are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
