Flat Rock A.M.E. yields impressive youthsBy CAROLYN CARY What could Fayette County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn, School Superintendent John DeCotis, Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown, and state Senator Valencia Seay (D-34, Clayton and Fayette counties) all have in common? They can deliver really good impromptu sermons. All were guests at the 150th birthday party at Flat Rock A.M.E. Church last Sunday, and each was given the opportunity to say a few words. And they did. The crux of their message is found in an article in this issue on the churchs celebration. It is not politically correct to get the religious views of our candidates, but I must tell you I was impressed with what they had to say when free to do so inside a church. The churchs pastor, the Rev. Edward J. Johnson Jr., was so impressed with these messages he commented that perhaps they each missed their calling. I have attended Flat Rock services on a number of occasions, and I have always been impressed with their attention to the youth. Each fourth Sunday, the youth are in charge of the service, with the exception, of course, of the sermon. They are at ease, and reaching for a microphone and quickly turning it on is done with confidence. Thirty years from now, any one of them could be filling the position of county commission chairman or school superintendent. I have also been impressed with the numbers of organizations that have been working together over the last 10 years. Over 40 churches are now supporting The Fayette Samaritans. Churches share their facilities with each other, holding services at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, first at one church, and the next year at another. I have watched with pride the brick wall between Fayetteville and Peachtree City slowly come down. Though I am a Methodist, I have been pleased with the addition of Catholic churches and a synagogue to our community. All of these happenings have helped to round out Fayette County, and I charge each of you to take part in continuing this worthy tradition.
