Boot drive in Fayetteville ends SundayFiremen collecting donations for three charities This weekend, firefighters from Fayette County and Fayetteville will be asking for donations to help three charitable organizations in their annual boot drive. This year, the drive supports the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the South Metro Bureau of the American Red Cross and the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation. The Muscular Dystrophy Association funds research about the disease; the Red Cross provides disaster aid, blood services and other public duties; the burn foundation helps promote awareness to prevent burns and also funds a special summer camp for children who have suffered burns. The boot drive began Friday and lasts through today. Businesses in Fayetteville allowed firefighters to set up shop and ask for donations to help out the charities. The Fayette County School System has also allowed firefighters to collect funds from students for a week to help boost the financial support for the drive, said Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Nelms said the funds donated to the boot drive would be used for local assistance by the agencies. Nelms also noted that all the Fayette County firefighters participating in the boot drive will be donating their own time; a county policy forbids employees from doing such activities while working on the clock, he noted.
