Third graders score at or above grade level in 8 area schools

The goal of the No Child Left Behind Act is to have all children performing on grade level by 2013-14. For eight Fulton County schools, that goal is now a reality. Each of the eight schools had 100 percent of their third grade students scoring at or above grade level in reading on the 2004 Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT). This elite eight represents a diverse group of schools from across the Fulton County district. Schools from Union City to Mountain Park are included. Some have high numbers of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Others have large numbers of limited English-speaking students. They all prove that if you set high expectations and accept no excuses, you will reach your goals.

Just behind these perfect scorers are 12 schools that had 99% scoring at or above grade level in reading. Forty-four of Fulton’s elementary schools had at least 95% of students at or above grade level.

The 2003-2004 school year was the first time that Georgia required third graders to meet or exceed reading performance levels in order to be promoted to fourth grade. Those who did not earn high enough scores on the spring CRCT were given the opportunity to attend summer school and retake the test. Ninety-three percent of students met required scores during the spring testing. Following the retest in July, 97% of all Fulton third graders showed reading proficiency.
