Southside Pioneers compete at national championshipsLast year the Southside Pioneer Track and Field Club had one member, Mauri Peoples, qualify and compete at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championship. This year the Southside Pioneers Track and Field Club had nine athletes compete in USATF and AAU National Junior Olympic Championships. This year travel was made possible in part from contributions of Peachtree City Rotary Club and a several other private sponsors. Graylin Ward brought home the silver medal as the second place finisher in the Midget Boys High Jump at the USATF National Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships held July 27-31 at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Ward is currently ranked as a National Elite Youth All-American, and is ranked fifth in the nation. At the same meet, Peoples placed 10th overall in the Youth Girls Pole Vault. Peoples is currently ranked as a National Elite Youth All-American, and is also ranked fifth in the nation. The 4x800M relay team comprised of Jonathan Garrett, Jake and Matt Lethbridge and David Mathis placed 12th overall at the meet and are now ranked 28th in the nation. The members of the relay team are National Youth Elite Honor Roll athletes. Recently at the 2004 AAU National Junior Olympic Championships Joy Ferrell took fourth place in the Youth Outdoor Pentathlon, is currently ranked 12th in the nation and is also currently ranked as a National Elite Youth All-American. Ferrell also competed in the Youth Girls High Jump and placed 11th overall. Joshua Ferrell competed in the Sub-Midget High Jump and placed 25th. Michelle Stegall placed 27th in the Youth Girls 800M. Danny Giglio, Young Men Pole Vault, #38. Young Men 4x800M Relay, #41: Matt Auers, Steven Morrison, Zach Lethridge and Daniel Shankle Joy Ferrell, Youth Girls 200M Hurdles, #65 Joy Ferrell, Youth Girls High Jump, #66 Kristin Olson, Young Women 400M Hurdles, #66 Young Women 4x400 relay team, #75: Kristin Olson. Elizabeth Hale, Mellany Stanislaus and Aneesha Lane Austin Eriquez, Imtermediate Boys 1500M, #75 Michelle Stegall, Youth Girls 400M, #86 Shauna Garrett, SubBantum Girls 1500M, #94 Joy Ferrell, Youth Girls Javelin Throw, #100 The SSPioneers will host their annual team awards banquet on Friday, August 20 from 6-8 p.m. at New Hope South Church in the Starrs Mill Area.
