Seals swim for Georgia in national championshipsThree swimmers represented the Southside Seals Masters Swim Team and Team Georgia at the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) Long Course National Championships in Savannah on Aug. 13-15. Each swimmer earned medals for placing in the top 10 in the country in their respective age groups and contributed to the total points for Team Georgia. The Georgia Women won the national title over North Carolina while the men placed second overall to Tar Heels. Seals swimmers who performed well were: Amy Starkey (Women 35-39) earned an eighth place finish in the 50M butterfly in her first USMS nationals.She also placed 11th in the 100M backstroke. Karol Welling (Women 40-44) swam to a ninth place in the Womens 160-199 200M freestyle relay and a 10th in the Mixed 120-159 200M medley relay. She also placed 13th in the 200M backstroke and 19th in the 100M backstroke. Rob Copeland (Men 45-49) had an outstanding meet with top 10 finishes in all his individual events including two second place finishes in the 200M butterfly and 1,500M freestyle. He also placed fifth in the 200M and 400M freestyles and sixth in the 100M butterfly. The Seals now begin the short course season and will be preparing to host their own PTC Pentathlon Meet in September. The Southside Seals is an adult swimming team for fitness swimmers, competitive swimmers and triathletes over the age of 19. Practices are held at Kedron Aquatic Center in Peachtree City on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m.
