The worldwide church marches on
By Dr Knox Herndon Between our home in Fayetteville and our church on Ga. Highway 85 South in Senoia, there is a beautiful waterfall with an old water wheel at a junction in the road called Starrs Mill. Throughout my walk as a Christian, I have been told that Gods timing is often like a slow-turning water wheel. As you look at a slow water wheel, it may appear that it is moving too slowly to really accomplish anything; however, we know differently. We know that it is the correct speed to get the grain crushed to make life-sustaining bread. And so it is with God, the wheels of time are slowly turning us toward the meeting of God our maker. Often times the wheels of time seem to turn slowly but they grind fine. While typing this article I am sitting in Shreveport, Louisiana at my daughter Nikki and Jeremy Campbells new apartment. Jeremy is currently in flight training to become a pilot in the Air force here at Barksdale Air Force Base. We are very proud of them both. Where I am the most proud is not of all their accomplishments of their schooling and how they met. I am the most proud of their faith in God and their love for his church. They are only going to be here for nine more months until they go to their next assignment in Oklahoma, near where Merle Haggard wrote Okie from Muskogee. I had to throw that in there because my mothers family were all from Okmulgee, Oklahoma, right down the bee line, as they used to call it, from Muskogee. I just thought it worthy to mention how life often goes full circle. Now back to Nikki and Jeremy. Even though they are only going to be in Shreveport for nine more months, they immediately visited churches in the area and settled on Willow Point Baptist Church near their apartment and went to work! They both not only attend the church, but joined the choir. My kind of Christians. You never heard, Well, we are praying about it. I loved this church from the moment I walked into the door. They have a wonderful meal every Wednesday night cooked by a super chef. It so happened that this particular Wednesday night was BBQ spare ribs and chicken. Need I say more? To further top it off, Nikki and Jeremy got their meal free because they had just become members and they give you one free meal when you join. When I then went to pay for this truly wonderful meal for Dee & Robbie and me, the sweet lady taking the money called back to the kitchen and said. Arent guests free? A rousing Yes, they are boomed from the kitchen. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Now the serious eating began. Then another sweet lady went walking around to all the tables handing our ice cream sandwiches for dessert. I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. Here was Gods extended church from Korea where Jeremy and Nikki met, to their separate colleges that they went to, to and through the special friendships of Chaplain Dave & Cheryl Campbell as we all served together in Korea. Always remember that if you are involved with the church, it is not about just you and your friends you have made there but part of a global movement of Gods overall plan for the earth. When you take communion in your church that communion table stretches hand in hand, heart to heart around the entire world even to the very heart of God. Praise the Lord it is so!
