Complaint on candidate: 150-foot rule violated?Abdul-Salaam said she was pointing out sign By JOHN MUNFORD
The actions of a candidate in the Democratic race for the Georgia House of Representatives District 72 race may be investigated after allegations that she violated the 150-foot campaign boundary at the New Hope polling place Tuesday. The Fayette County Board of Elections will determine where to go next with the complaint against Roberta Abdul-Salaam, who counters a claim hat she was asked to leave the precinct. Abdul-Salaam said she entered the precinct to inquire about the posting of the sign outlying the 150-foot boundary, which she said was placed on the entrance to the polling place at New Hope Baptist Church. She added that she was not wearing any campaign material such as a T-shirt or hat. I had on a long-sleeve black blouse, Abdul-Salaam said. As former chair of the Clayton County Board of Elections, Abdul-Salaam says she knows better, and thats one of the reasons she went into the precinct in the first place: to inquire about the placement of the sign. Abdul-Salaam said she and Rep. Tyrone Brooks videotaped the exterior of the polling place because of the sign difficulty, but she didnt want to make a big issue out of it. Abdul-Salaam said she could have alerted local TV stations to the problem, but she declined to do so. Earlier in the day, a representative of New Hope Baptist asked Abdul-Salaams supporters to relocate off-property, which they did, Abdul-Salaam said.
