New faces in charge at two schoolsFor students, the start of school means new clothes, new memories, new teachers, perhaps a new school, and for some, a new principal. New principals at two of the countys elementary schools greeted returning students on the first day. Kiawana Kennedy replaces Lynda Lambeth, who retired at the end of the 2003-2004 school year, at Peachtree City Elementary. Kennedy has 13 years of teaching and administrative experience. She comes to Fayette from Coweta County where she was principal of White Oak Elementary last year after serving as principal of Winston Dowdell Academy in Newnan the year prior. Kennedy says her goals for the year are to visit each classroom and have professional conversations with teachers about curriculum and instruction as well as spend time talking to students about what they are learning. I believe the quality of instruction and what happens in the classrooms between students and teachers on a daily basis are what really matter in the work of the school, says Kennedy. She says she will also spend time becoming familiar with the school culture and community. Kristin Berryman takes the reins at Hood Avenue Primary from Dianne Teer, who also retired at the end of last year. Berryman has over 18 years of teaching and administrative experience. Last year she was an assistant principal at Starrs Mill High after coming to Fayette from Coweta County where she was principal of White Oak Elementary for four years. Among her many goals for the coming school year, Berryman says she and her staff will strive to provide a challenging and balanced curriculum that concentrates on the processes that spur advancement and instructional improvement in mathematics, reading and attendance.
