No change to millage rate for Tyrone; residents concerned about The BarnBy MICHAEL BOYLAN
Though there was some public discussion about The Barn in Tyrone at Thursday nights Town Council meeting, the big news was that Tyrones millage rate, set at 2.9 mills, will not change. No one spoke in favor or in opposition, though the public will have one more chance to weigh in on the matter Thursday at 7 p.m. As for The Barn, several residents spoke out against it, stating that they felt it was being used for commercial activity in a residential area. They even provided evidence of rental activity in 2001. The Barn is owned by Chip Young and has recently been the site of state Rep. Lynn Westmorelands post-election parties. Youngs attorney addressed the council and stated that Young had stopped charging rental fees for use of the facility. Council told town attorney Brad Sears to look futher into the matter. In the only other remaining item on Thursdays agenda, council heard an appeal from Ann Williams, a Valleywood Road resident who owns a little over 26 acres. A large portion of the property is land use planned for park area which makes it hard for Williams, who has lived on the property since 1968 and is looking to sell her property and move closer to her family. Council directed staff to advertise a land use map amendment and will have the planning commission make a recommendation for what the proper land use should be. Town manager Barry Amos thinks it will be changed to some residential use.
