Chamber backs SPLOSTBy JOHN THOMPSON
In a move that must have the Fayette County Commission smiling, the Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution last week urging passage of the SPLOST referendum in November. If passed, the added penny sales tax would generate more than $100 million over five years to help pay for the countys transportation needs. In a press release, the chamber said the quality of life is adversely affected by traffic congestion, and the sales tax would generate the funds to fix current roads and build new ones. The chamber also addressed the squabble between Peachtree City and Fayette County over distribution of the tax dollars. It has been the Fayette County Chamber of Commerces continued hope that Fayette County and Peachtree City could reach an agreement on the particular percentage of funds the cities would be allocated through the SPLOST, the release stated. But whatever the outcome of these negotiations, the chamber is urging residents to support the tax, so the window of opportunity is not lost for securing state and federal funds for the projects. The chamber is hosting a transportation forum Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. at Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville to outline the improvements envisioned by the plan. In other SPLOST news, Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown is taking his case against the SPLOST to the Fayette County NAACP Saturday at 4 p.m. The meeting is at Flat Rock A.M.E. Church at 148 Chapel Lane, just off Ga. Highway 54.
