A recent study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) found that 1 in 12 employees are using illicit drugs. It is even more prevalent for small businesses. The Institute for a Drug-Free Workplace reports that illicit drug users are almost four times more likely to injure themselves or their coworkers on the job. Further, the Institute states that drug users in the workplace often become drug dealers in the workplace. Substance abuse has been reported to cost U.S. companies billions of dollars annually in lost productivity, accidents, employee turnover, increased health care costs, absenteeism, and workers compensation claims. In 2002, 44 percent of drug abusers were employed in very small businesses, compared to 13 percent in large businesses. Jerome Houfek, President of the National Drug-Free Workplace Alliance in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, says, Drug-free workplace programs began, historically, with the countys largest corporations and over the years, have inadvertently, squeezed substance users toward small business.
