Schools getting ready to open Aug. 6Coweta County Schools open August 6. The school system anticipates a starting school enrollment of approximately 19,500 students, following the usual year-to-year growth rate of about 5 percent. Teachers return to school for the week of pre-planning Aug. 3-5. Registration will be held at individual schools (for attendance zone information, call the School System Transportation Office at 770-254-2820). Visitation at schools will be held Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon at all middle schools, and from noon to 2 p.m. at all elementary schools. High schools will hold visitation hours at various times before the start of school. Northgate High School will hold visitation at the campus Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. East Coweta High School and Newnan High School will both hold visitation times Aug. 5 from 1-3 p.m. The Central Educational Center will hold visitation Aug. 5 from 2-4 p.m. This is simply a time for parents and students new to the building to visit briefly. A representative of the transportation department will be on hand at each school during this time, and the first day of school, to provide students and parents information regarding buses and routes. Teachers will not be available for conferences during visitation days. Conferences are to be scheduled at other times. Open Houses for individual school will be held at various times shortly after opening day. The school system anticipates about 150 new teachers and their teacher mentors will begin new teacher training July 28-Aug. 2 and return to their classrooms for teacher planning Aug. 3. Regular school attendance and punctual arrival for the school day is strongly urged, because of its importance to a child's educational success. Coweta County high schools operate on a block schedule, which allows completion of a full Carnegie Unit Course in one semester of 90-minute classes. Therefore, missed classes at any point during the semester will seriously jeopardize a student's success. Parents can get information on bus schedules, routes and school districts by calling the Coweta County School System Transportation Department at 770-254-2820. Furthermore, parents will be able to access information on bus routes before the start of school by visiting www.cowetaschools.org. Schools will hold registration Aug. 3-5, from 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. Pre-K students must be 4 years old by Sept. 1; Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by Sept. 1; and first-grade students must be 6 years old by Sept. 1. If registering a child in Coweta County schools for the first time, the Coweta County School System requires the following documentation: State-issued birth certificate (hospital copy is not acceptable). Proof of residence (must be a CURRENT electric bill or a letter from the power company stating that power has been connected to the residence AND a current, signed lease/purchase agreement in the parent or legal guardian's name). Copy of student's Social Security card. (Parent may elect not to release the number by signing a waiver. At that time the school will assign an alternative ID number to the student. However, it is suggested that the Social Security number be used since that is the number that is used to track testing and high school records to determine HOPE Scholarship eligibility.) Certificate of hearing, vision & dental exam (Form 3300) or a signed 120-day waiver. Last report card/withdrawal/transfer form. High school transcripts are required at the time of registration for all high school students. State ID or drivers license of parent or legal guardian registering child (student may only be registered by biological parent or legal guardian). If parents are divorced, custody papers must be provided. If parents are divorced, the parent with physical custody must live in the school district. The legal guardian must live in the school district. Legal guardians are also REQUIRED to present proof of guardianship at the time of registration. Emergency Contact Information must be completed by the first day of school in order for the student to attend. For more detailed registration information please visit www.cowetaschools.org. If you are unsure which school serves your home, please contact our Transportation Department at 770-254-2820. Immunization and health screenings can be obtained from private physicians or from the Coweta County Health Department located at 137 Jackson Street in Newnan. The county health department gives immunizations and screenings Monday through Friday from 8-11 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. with no appointment necessary at its Newnan office. For more efficient service, bring copies of former immunization records with you, and bring all pertinent Medicaid information if applicable. Immunization forms are not available at the schools. They are obtainable only at the physician's office or the Health Department.
