Hockey league for women forming in PTCBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Suzanne Williams is not just a hockey mom. She is now also a player and the Ladies League coordinator for the Peachtree City Hockey Recreational League, which begins play Saturday, Aug. 21, from 9-10 p.m. at the Kedron Hockey Rink in Peachtree City. Williams first go interested in hockey when her son, Chase, began playing. She would often go out on the rink and skate with him during open rink time and really enjoyed it. Last spring, she and several other hockey moms, as well as one woman who just signed up, joined the co-ed league and gave it a try. It was one thing to know how to skate, but it took awhile to learn how to skate and also control the stick and a puck. said Williams. The women had a lot of fun playing but eventually more advanced players began playing and play got too rough. That was when the idea for a Ladies League started. As far as this upcoming season goes, Willams is hoping for at least 18 women to register so that two teams can be fielded for scrimmages each Saturday evening. Weve had good response to our flyers so far, but we also understand that not everybody can commit to coming out every Saturday night, said Williams. The eventual goal is to have several teams in the league and for the teams to play a full schedule of games. The registration fee for the league is $100 for Fayette County residents and $105 for non-county residents. Players are also responsible for supplying their own equipment which includes an HECC approved Helmet (Face protection optional if the player is over 18 but it is recommended), plastic capped elbow pads, shin guards for hockey, hockey gloves, a hockey stick and in-line skates. Equipment can be purchased at Play It Again Sports in Fayetteville or Fat City in Peachtree City. To register or get more information on the league, phone Suzanne Williams at 770-599-0466 or e-mail to wmssuzanne@aol.com
