Flat Rock AME church will celebrate 150 yearsFlat Rock African American Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, one of the oldest churches in Fayette County, will celebrate its 150th anniversary during the month of August, culminating in a 150th Anniversary and Homecoming service Sunday, Aug. 22, at both the 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. services. Flat Rock garners a place in Fayette Countys history as the oldest African American congregation in Fayette County, a spokesperson said. It serves as the mother church from which six other Fayette County churches have been birthed, to include two other local A.M.E. churches. We are proud of the 150 years that Flat Rock has been a part of Fayette Countys history and what it says for African Methodism in educating some African Americans during the early years. This church has been a foundation of the community for a long time. The church is at 148 Chapel Lane, just off Ga. Hwy. 54 near Adams Farm. The current pastor is the Rev. Edward J. Johnson Jr. Chairperson for the 150th anniversary celebration is Mrs. Linda Parker. For information about the church or its activities, call 770-461-0283.
