Glenn, Westmoreland secure endorsementsAs the Aug. 10 runoff nears in the campaign for the 8th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, both candidates have announced this week endorsements from prominent current and former congressmen. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich announced his support for Republican candidate Dylan Glenn in Glenn's bid to replace retiring Rep. Mac Collins in Congress. "I've endorsed hundreds of candidates in my years in Congress," said Gingrich, "and none make me prouder than my endorsement of Dylan Glenn.Ê I know that Dylan will do an extraordinary job." Gingrich served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999, and served for 20 years as a congressman from Georgia. Gingrich at one time represented many of the counties that now make up Georgia's 8th District. Glenn has served two Republican presidents, most recently as special assistant to the President for economic policy under George W. Bush. "I'm honored and humbled to have a great Georgian endorsing my campaign for Congress," said Glenn.Ê"What I hope to do in Congress is what Speaker Gingrich did, fight for Georgia's values." Glenns opponent, state Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, secured the endorsement of U.S. Rep. John Linder, the latest in a string of Georgia legislators to publicly support Westmoreland. I have known Lynn both as a leader and as a friend, said Linder.ÊHe has proven to the people of the 8th District that he is the best candidate in this race.ÊHe has lived in the district, raised a family there and started a small business there.Ê Lynn has the leadership experience and a voting record to prove it.ÊI am proud to stand behind and endorse Lynn Westmoreland. Our nation faces tough obstacles in the months and years to come and we need strong leaders to face them. Lynn Westmoreland has the experience and leadership necessary to help us meet those challenges and win the war on terror. Congressman Linder is a great friend and a great Congressman from our state, stated Westmoreland. I am honored to have his support as well as his confidence in my leadership ability. Since announcing his candidacy in 2003, Westmoreland has received the support of U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss; Congressmen Nathan Deal, Jack Kingston, John Linder, Charlie Norwood, five of the seven state senators from the 8th District; all 13 state representatives from the 8th District; the Club for Growth, an anti-tax watchdog group that helps elect conservative candidates to Congress; the American Conservative Union, the nations oldest and largest conservative organization; the 60 Plus Association; and the Georgia Right to Life.
