History program comes to Falcon FieldHistory comes to life when area youth participate in Education Through Living History, a World War II history program presented by the Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force at the Historical Airpower Facility at Falcon Field in Peachtree City. Area teachers and youth group leaders are invited to learn more about the program and meet volunteers at a special presentation of Education Through Living History Saturday, Sept. 11, 2-4 p.m.ÊRefreshments will be provided.Ê The primary mission of the Commemorative Air Force is preserving World War II aircraft as a tribute to the men and women who helped win World War II, said Jake Tryon, wing leader of the local chapter of the Commemorative Air Force, the Dixie Wing. Our second most important mission is teaching history. Education Through Living History, launched in January 2003, includes a 45-minute presentation by Dixie Wing volunteers on a variety of prepared topics, including the attack on Pearl Harbor and The Arsenal of Democracy. Students are also provided a tour of the Historical Airpower Facility workshop where volunteers restore and maintain several aircraft to flying status, including a famous North American P-51 Mustang and rare Douglas SBD Dauntless dive-bomber.ÊEducation Through Living History presentations and tours last two hours and are available free of charge and on a first come-first serve basis. We have had over 5,000 students, family members and veterans attend Education Through Living History programs in the last 18 months and we are anxious to let teachers and youth group leaders know that we are here to help them teach United States and World History, said Jennifer Roth, Dixie Wing Education Liaison.ÊWe also presented our first annual World War II Day for families in April and we are in the process of planning A Flight With Eagles, a panel discussion featuring WWII fighter pilots in observance of Veteran's Day."Ê "A Flight With Eagles" is scheduled for Nov. 13.ÊIn addition, the Dixie Wing CA hosted the Experimental Aircraft Association Wild Blue Wonders state competition in June 2004 that saw the winning team of students from Fernbank Science Center advance to the national competition in Oshkosh, Wisc. Other Education Through Living History programs under development include merit badge clinics and special guest speakers for African - American History Month and Womens History Month.Ê Teachers and youth group leaders can register for the Education Through Living History Teachers Open House by contacting Jennifer Roth at 678-361-2040.ÊMore information about Education Through Living History and the Dixie Wing can be found at www.dixiewing.org.
