Holyfield guest house damaged by lightning strike Sunday nightBy JOHN MUNFORD
Several Fayette homes struck by lightning Sunday night kept firefighters busy, including a blaze at the guest house of Evander Holyfields estate off Ga. Highway 279, officials said. Fayette County Fire Marshal David Scarbrough said the strike at the boxers mansion appeared to be either one lightning bolt that split four different ways or four different bolts of lightning that connected at the same time. Fire crews were delayed a little longer than normal because the two closest fire stations were battling another lightning strike that caused an attic fire on Westbridge Road, Scarbrough said. When they arrived at Holyfields, the 1,200 sq. ft. guest house was fully involved in flames, Scarbrough said. Firefighters were able to save about half of the structure, but the smoke, heat and fire damage was estimated at between $75,000 and $80,000, Scarbrough said. No one was injured and no damages were reported to the 54,000 sq. ft. main house and another 4,000 sq. ft. home on the property, Scarbrough said.
