Scores: No Fayette school left behindBy JOHN THOMPSON We passed. No Fayette school was left behind. Shortly after 2:30 p.m. Monday, Fayette Countys education leaders learned that all of the systems 28 schools met Georgias Adequate Yearly Progress testing criterion and no schools would have to offer parents the option of transferring to other schools. The Adequate Yearly Progress requirements is part of the No Child Left Behind law that requires states to set goals based on student achievement data. States are required to raise the bar for AYP each year to meet the NCLB goal of having all students proficient in reading and math by the 2013-14 school year. The law also requires each school district to to sort test results by the racial/ethnic category, disability, limited English proficiency and socioeconomic status. While all of Fayette Countys schools made the grade, the news was not so good in neighboring Coweta County, where only 71 percent of the schools passed the AYP requirements. In a press release, Fayette Superintendent of Education John DeCotis said the No Child Left Behind program will help the school system reach its ultimate goal. The implementation of NCLB will be rigorous, and it will take the effort of every school administrator, teacher, student, parent and community member. Working together, we can achieve our goal: improved academic achievement for every Fayette County school and student. |
