Liquor wins in SharpsburgBy JOHN THOMPSON
It appears the second time was the charm for thirsty Sharpsburg residents. By a hefty majority Tuesday, citizens said they wanted liquor by the drink in Sharpsburg. Forty-six residents voted yes, while 27 voted no. In the last election, the measure lost by one vote, but it was determined that residents outside of Sharpsburg had voted in the election. In another hotly contested race, Sheriff Mike Yeager easily defeated challenger Scott Smith. With all but the provisional ballots counted, Yeager garnered 12,039 votes to Smiths 4,526. While the voters liked Yeager, they did not care for the incumbent school board members. In the District 2 school board, chairman Rick Melville lost to challenger Sue Brown by a 2-1 margin. Brown received 2,176 votes, while Melville got 1,056. County attorney Mitch Powell nearly doubled incumbent Marihope Troutmans vote totals to earn the District 5 seat. Powell got 1,520 votes to Troutmans 792 votes. The only incumbent school board member that has a chance of returning to office is Allan Payton. In the District 2 at-large race, Payton received 5,690 votes, while challenger Frank Farmer got 6,035 votes. The two will face off Aug.10 in a runoff for the seat. Voters will also decide Aug.10 who will fill the seat of outgoing Commissioner Vernon Mutt Hunter. In the District 1 race, Ricky Ragan received 1,443 votes, while Paul Poole tallied 1,142. Just over 40 percent of Cowetas 48,000 voters cast ballots Tuesday.
