What could be more fun than performing the famous tunes and
hilarious dialogue from the high-energy musical Grease? How
about being in the audience and singing along with every song
and mouthing every wisecrack along with the cast? Unless you
have been living under the proverbial rock for the past 30 years,
the antics of the T-birds and the Pink Ladies are well known
to all. Still a great theatre experience, not to mention an all-time
classic movie, Grease is one show that never seems
to grow old. Every song and every scene have something special
to offer. From Greased Lightning to Beauty
School Dropout, the fun never stops.
Tomorrow evening, the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts
of Coweta County invites all greasers at heart to
become honorary members of the club for three rockin nights,
July 22-24. Shows start at 7 p.m. and tickets are available for
the general public at $7 and for seniors and students at $5 each.
Tickets may be purchased from cast members or by visiting The
Centre box office at 1523 Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan between
8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by calling the Centre
at 770-254-2787.
The musical, directed by Dr. Richard McMichen of East Coweta
High School, is a part of the STAR (Superintendent's Theatre
Arts Resource) Project, a summer theatre arts workshop for Coweta
students. Students from local public and private high schools
auditioned in May to participate. In addition to performing (acting,
singing and dancing), students build sets, learn about lighting
and sound, and handle publicity duties from selling ads for the
program to participating in interviews.
Director McMitchen is thrilled with the concept of the STAR
Project.
"It is wonderful to put on a production using students
from all of the high schools. Participants begin the summer with
different levels of experience, but all grow as actors through
the process. This year we have a very talented cast, McMitchen
said.
Instructors for the program include McMichen, Erin Roesel Walton
(musical director), Laura Prout (choreographer), and Donald Nixon
(producer).
