Tyrone tables most of Wieland requestsAt last Thursdays meeting of the Tyrone Town Council, John Wieland Homes had several requests regarding a piece of property between Kirkley Road and Sandy Creek Road up for discussion. Among them were an annexation request, a request to change the land use designation/map amendment and a rezoning request. Though the council and the citizens in attendance were generally receptive to their request, the council only took action on changing the land use map. On the portion of the Wieland property fronting on Ga. Highway 74 measuring 26.7 acres, Wieland Homes was requesting a change from light industrial to office industrial. Council found that this was consistent with the rest of the area and took action to change it. On the remaining 193.9 acres, which is zoned light industrial, Wieland Homes was requesting it be zoned R-48, which allows for residential lots. The plan was to put 149 lots on the 193.9 acres. Residents of Kirkley Road and Mann Road, which are near the property, favored residential zoning over light industrial but would like something less dense than what was suggested. Council agreed and changed the land use map from light industrial to two-acre conservation. The rest of the matters, including an annexation request for a 10 acre landlocked piece towards the back of the property were tabled to the Aug. 19 meeting. In the meantime, Wieland Homes, council and staff will work together and try to come up with something that will work best for all parties involved.
